After decades of civil war, the Republic of South Sudan gained its independence on July 9, 2011. But despite all efforts to build a peaceful state, the first decade of statehood took a violent course: In December 2013, South Sudan slid into a bloody civil war that evolved into an amalgam of complexly nested conflict landscapes rather than a unified conflict with clearly definable parties. Already ten years after its independence and eight years after the beginning of a bloody civil war, the very young republic is currently in a tough and highly conflictual peace process. This presentation will discuss the possibilities and limitations of the country's political system and prospects for conflict transformation and state development.
