Graz Research Contributions to Peace and Conflict

[Translate to English:]

[Translate to English:]

From September 28-29, the university-wide conference on Peace and Conflict will take place in SZ 15.22 (RESOWI G2). It aims to make visible the expertise of researchers at the University of Graz on the important problem areas of peace and conflict. The topics range from domestic violence or democratic participation to (world) wars and problems of (de-)radicalization. The conference is part of the Conflict - Peace - Democracy Cluster of the Faculty of Law in cooperation with the Institute of the Foundations of Law and the Research Network Heterogeneity and Cohesion.

As an institution in the tradition of the Enlightenment, the university considers rationality to be at humankind's service. Since human everyday life is characterized by overlaps and incompatibilities of many different interests, one focus of academic activity is on dealing with conflicts, whether local, national, regional or international, or characterized by structural or physical violence. While conflicts as a visible expression of human discontent and related violence are an indication of a need for action and thus a thoroughly positive phenomenon, remaining in this state is usually not desirable. Accordingly, peace denotes a desirable situation far from violence. Although research on this subject has become increasingly specialized in the course of the 20th century and independent scientific fields have been established, the university study of conflict and peace is still scattered across many different academic disciplines, which often use completely different terminology.

Accordingly, research on peace and conflict at the University of Graz is also spread across numerous faculties: from the natural sciences to theology to the humanities, law and social sciences. In order to make the scientific contribution of the University of Graz to this subject area visible, this conference brings together researchers from a wide range of scientific fields whose work lies in the subject area of peace and conflict.
